Addo birds

From our guide Elias:

On an afternoon walk I was surprised to see an African spoonbill at one of our waterholes. This is the first time I have seen this particular species probing for aquatic invertebrates with its red spoon shaped bill.

The whole Addo area has got 449 different bird species, some with as equally fascinating behaviours like the fiscal shrike, which is nick named the butcher bird because of its habit of impaling its prey on thorns which resemble carcases hanging in a butchery.

Another common visitor to our reserve is the secretary bird. These birds have strong long scaly legs with which to kill snakes and are often see looking through the grass.

See http://www.addoelephantbacksafaris.co.za/activities.html for more information on wildlife in the area.
