Meet Duma!

Meet Duma - according to Walter, the "Most adorable of the three elephants at Addo Elephant Back Safaris"

Age: Approximately 19
Weight: About 5 tons
Meaning of name: Rolling Thunder
Favourite browse: Sweet thorn and Common guarrie. Often debarks trees.

Nickname: Peacemaker as he always prevents Mukwa from fighting with Thaba especially when guests are present or during the safari. .

Duma is also the most talkative of the three elephants.

He could easily be mistaken for a female due to his triangular head profile in side view. He lacks the rounded head profile distinctive to male elephants.

Duma has got an erect body. More saddle backed. Remove the trunk and tusks and give him a bushy tail and he'd look like a pony!

Duma does have very long eye lashes which extend forward. He is the most handsome elephant. He is so placid and can be ridden even without an elephant handler. All new elephant handlers get their skills tested by working with Duma as an interview.

Despite his docileness he does dominate the other two elephants when it comes to wrestling and boxing.

Interesting Factors: If not interested in walks he walks very slow and might spray you with water regurgitated from inside his body. Difficult to bribe with treats. Not as greedy as Mukwa.

Meet Thaba!

Walter Gwarada introduces Thaba.

Name of elephant: Thaba
Meaning of name: Happiness
Age: 21
Weight: 4 and half tons
Shoulder height: 2,8 metres
Favourite browse: Rhus species

Behaviour: Very docile but not stupid. An unrevealing character with withdrawn brown eyes. Strong sense of humour though - may just stretch down to politely ask people to get off.

Appearance: Body length shorter than the other two elephants, Mukwa and Duma. Easy to identify due to a less developed broken tusk as a result of dominance fighting. Very rounded head profile
